Welcome to Portugal!

Portugal completely stole my heart, and I can’t wait for the day I get to return! My trip took me to both Sintra and Lisbon, but I didn’t get nearly enough time to fully soak in everything these amazing places have to offer. While most visitors head straight for Lisbon, I’d highly recommend making time for Sintra. This enchanting town is like something out of a fairy tale, filled with breathtaking castles, charming squares, and a vibrant atmosphere bursting with food and shopping. I could have easily stayed a few more days just wandering its picturesque streets. That said, walking through Sintra is a workout—everything is either uphill or downhill, and my calves let me know the next day! But honestly, I’d endure the soreness all over again in a heartbeat just to experience it once more.

Activities and accommodations in Portugal.

The Pena Palace

Standing atop the hills of Sintra, Pena Palace is a dazzling architectural wonder that seems straight out of a fairy tale. Its bold reds, yellows, and blues make it one of Portugal’s most visually striking landmarks, seamlessly blending Gothic, Moorish, and Renaissance elements in a true masterpiece of Romanticism. Originally a medieval monastery, King Ferdinand II reimagined it in the 19th century, transforming it into an extravagant royal retreat. Beyond its vibrant exterior, the palace offers sweeping views of the lush forests and coastline, providing a breathtaking backdrop for visitors. Exploring its opulent halls and whimsical gardens feels like stepping into a dream, making it easy to see why it holds the prestigious status of a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Quinta da Regaleira

Nestled in the heart of Sintra, Quinta da Regaleira is a captivating estate filled with mystery and symbolism. Built in the early 20th century by António Augusto Carvalho Monteiro, it blends Gothic, Renaissance, and Manueline architecture to create an enchanting atmosphere. Its most famous feature, the Initiation Well, spirals deep underground, believed to have been used for secret rituals tied to Freemasonry. Beyond the well, visitors can explore hidden tunnels, lush gardens, and intricate structures that spark curiosity at every turn. Whether wandering through the palace or uncovering concealed passageways, Quinta da Regaleira feels like a beautifully crafted mystery waiting to be unraveled.

Sintra National Palace

Sintra National Palace, the best-preserved medieval royal residence in Portugal, is a striking blend of Gothic, Moorish, and Manueline architecture. Located in the heart of Sintra, its most recognizable feature is the pair of towering white chimneys that rise above its elegant facade. Once a retreat for Portuguese monarchs, the palace’s lavish interiors are adorned with intricate tilework, ornate ceilings, and rich historical artifacts that showcase centuries of regal influence. Each room tells a story, from the Swan Room’s painted ceilings to the stunning Magpie Room, reflecting the palace’s long-standing traditions. Beyond its architectural beauty, the palace offers breathtaking views of Sintra’s rolling hills, adding to the enchanting atmosphere.

Town Square

Sintra’s town square, also known as Praça da República, is the perfect spot to unwind and soak in the town’s charming atmosphere. Surrounded by colorful buildings, inviting cafés, and artisan shops, it offers a wonderful place to sit back, enjoy delicious food and drinks, and simply watch the world go by. The presence of beautifully groomed horses adds to the fairytale-like charm, making the experience feel even more magical. With the stunning Sintra National Palace as a backdrop and the lively hum of daily life filling the air, this square truly captures the essence of Sintra. It’s the kind of place that makes you want to linger just a little longer, taking in every detail.

NH Sintra Centro

During my stay in Sintra, I chose the NH Sintra Centro, and it turned out to be the perfect spot. Situated right in the town square, it was within walking distance of nearly everything, making it incredibly convenient. With plenty of restaurants and shops nearby, exploring the area was effortless, and the views from the hotel were simply breathtaking. I booked a room with a balcony, which I highly recommend—since most places don’t open until 10 AM, it was the perfect way to start the day, sitting outside and taking in the stunning castles and landscapes. The room itself was spacious, featuring both a living room and bedroom, providing plenty of comfort. While the hotel does have an on-site bar and restaurant, I’d suggest dining elsewhere, as the prices were quite high. Overall, though, it was a fantastic place to stay!

Pink Street

Pink Street, officially known as Rua Nova do Carvalho, is one of Lisbon’s most vibrant and lively spots, famous for its distinctive pink pavement and energetic nightlife. Once the center of the city’s red-light district, it has transformed into a trendy hub filled with bars, restaurants, and live music venues. By day, you can stroll through its colorful surroundings, admiring the blend of historic and modern architecture, while at night, the street comes alive with entertainment, attracting locals and tourists alike. Whether you're looking for a great cocktail, live performances, or simply a fun atmosphere to experience Lisbon’s eclectic culture, Pink Street is the place to be!

Riverfront Boardwalk

Lisbon’s riverfront boardwalk, stretching along the banks of the Tagus River, offers a breathtaking setting to soak in the city's beauty and maritime charm. Whether strolling beneath the golden hues of a sunset or enjoying the refreshing breeze off the water, this scenic promenade provides a peaceful escape from the bustling streets. The boardwalk is lined with inviting cafés, street performers, and picturesque views of iconic landmarks like the 25 de Abril Bridge and the Belém Tower, adding to its lively yet relaxed atmosphere. It’s the perfect spot to take a leisurely walk, sit by the water’s edge, or watch boats drift across the horizon.

Lx Boutique Hotel

During my stay in Lisbon, I chose the Lx Boutique Hotel, and it was an excellent choice. The hotel’s prime location made it easy to explore the city, with Pink Street just steps away, offering an exciting nightlife scene filled with bars, live music, and energetic crowds. One of the best parts of my stay was the balcony, which provided stunning views of the Tagus River, allowing me to wake up to the peaceful sight of boats gliding across the water and unwind in the evening as the sun set over the city. The hotel itself had a stylish, modern vibe with comfortable rooms and thoughtful details that made the experience even more enjoyable. Surrounded by incredible restaurants and cultural attractions, it was the perfect base for soaking in Lisbon’s charm.
